Historic Linwood Avenue
Historic Linwood Avenue in Buffalo NY
Linwood Avenue runs from West Delavan Avenue all the way to North Street between Delaware Avenue and Main Street. Linwood Avenue is one of the most impressive streets in the City of Buffalo in terms of residential architecture. Having been planned and plotted in the 1830’s, Linwood Avenue is rich with history and has been preserved throughout its nearly 200 year existence.
From the website of the Linwood Preservation District, “our tree-lined, residential neighborhood shows the work of many famous local architects and prime examples of styles including Vernacular, Second Empire, Gothic Revival, Italianate, Stick, Shingle, Queen Ann, and Georgian and Colonial Revival, and Mission Bungalow… Linwood Avenue developed into a desirable residential neighborhood with growth that can be seen today with the variations of architectural styles on each block as the decades brought further growth to Linwood Avenue. You will find homes built in the 1840s to modern day.”
The Linwood Preservation District was established on October 17, 1978 by the Buffalo Preservation Board and is currently cared for by The Linwood Preservation District & Friends. Their mission is to preserve and protect the historic character of this beautiful Buffalo neighborhood.
Buffalo NY’s Linwood Avenue
A walk down Linwood Avenue in the summer time is one of the most enjoyable experiences for anyone that loves residential architecture. Designed to be a very walkable neighborhood, it’s no surprise that this one-way street offers a great option to those looking for a leisurely stroll with plenty of sights to see.
In addition to Linwood Avenue’s extreme walkability, it’s also one of the most bike friendly streets in the City of Buffalo. Nothing says biking heaven quite like wide bike lanes on a one-way street with several protective measures taken throughout the entire stretch of the avenue. It offers a great biking route through the heart of the city when the only other options would be the Delaware Avenue or Main Street.
If you are a fan of architecture, or even just a lover of beautiful houses, and you haven’t yet explored Linwood Avenue, then you really should take advantage of our next nice weather day. With ample street parking, it’s simple to park on one end of the avenue and walk up and down each side of the street. You will not be disappointed.
